Little Richard Documentary celebrates the talent — and mystery — of a legend

Beginning today, PBS presents a new "American Masters" documentary about singer, musician and composer Richard Penniman, famously known as Little Richard. The program focuses on both his impact on popular music as he went in and out of rock 'n' roll and on his complicated, sexually shifting private life. It's called "Little Richard: King And Queen Of Rock 'n' Roll." Our TV critic David Bianculli has this review.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus recalls the first laugh she got — and the ER trip that followed

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is best known for playing Elaine on the hit comedy series Seinfeld, but her credits also include SNL, The New Adventures of Old Christine and the HBO series Veep. Along the way, she's won 11 Emmy awards. In the new movie, You Hurt My Feelings, Louis-Dreyfus plays a writer whose world is turned upside down when she learns that her husband hates the novel she's working on — despite his reassurances to the contrary.

Actor Joel Edgerton avoids conflict in real life, but embraces it on-screen

Edgerton stars in the new Paul Schrader film, Master Gardener. He previously played Anakin Skywalker's half brother, Owen Lars, in the Star Wars prequel films and in the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi. In the 2016 film Loving, he played Richard Loving, a white man who married a Black woman. The relationship prompted the historic Supreme Court decision Loving v. Virginia, which overturned state laws that made interracial marriage illegal.

Horror-comedy 'Beau Is Afraid' is a passion project gone astray

Having made a name for himself with the A24-released horror pictures "Hereditary" and "Midsommar," the writer-director Ari Aster has a new movie in theaters. It's called "Beau Is Afraid." And it tells the darkly comic story of a man named Beau, played by Joaquin Phoenix, who's just trying to get home to visit his mother.

A new eight-part TV series called "Drops Of God" is about a competition between a French woman and Japanese man to inherit the world's most valuable wine collection. The first two episodes of this multilingual show dropped Friday on Apple TV+. Our critic at large John Powers says that it's an engrossing tale that's as much about inheritance as wine.
