Maggie Smith

Maggie Smith, the renowned British actress best known to American audiences for her roles in the "Harry Potter" films and the masterpiece series "Downton Abbey," died last Friday in London. She was 89. She spoke to Dave Davies about her career in 2016.

Known for her recent work in Downton Abbey and the Harry Potter films, the Oscar-winning actress now stars in The Lady in the Van, a film about an elderly woman who lived in a van for 15 years.

On the hit PBS Masterpiece series, the social rules the characters have always known are changing as the world events of the 20th century unfold. The series' creator, Julian Fellowes, says his relatives who lived through that era inspired his lasting interest in class.
