He co-founded the Actors Studio with Lee Strasberg, and helped develop method acting. His new memoir, Elia Kazan: A Life, includes reflections on his cooperation with HUAC's investigation of communists in the entertainment industry.

Critic-at-large Laurie Stone explores the work of the AIDS activist organization ACT UP, and the artist collective associated with them, Grand Fury. In light of the recent rise of inaccurate and hateful messages about people with the disease, Grand Fury launched a street art campaign throughout New York City to educate the public.

Stuart Allan is a cartographer who believes a map should be at once accurate and aesthetically pleasing. He joins Fresh Air to talk about his work, and the technical innovations which have led to greater precision in mapmaking.

Connor worked in the 1960s and 1970s, but her career really took off in the 1980s. She tells Fresh Air's Terry Gross about her early records, performing on the road, and overcoming her alcoholism. Connor's most recent album is called New Again.

Film critic Stephen Schiff reviews the new Christmas movie Scrooged, which is a modern take on Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Schiff says that, while the casting of Bill Murray was inspired, the film is caught between schmaltz and humbug, and ends up being nothing at all.

The clarinetist is accompanied by bassist Phil Falnigan and guitarist Howard Alden. Davern was originally known as a New Orleans-style player, but performed in varied styles ranging from traditional bop to free jazz.

Writer Patrick McGrath grew up near England's Broadmoor mental hospital, where his father worked. He is now a horror writer. His collection of short fiction is called Blood and Water and Other Tales. A novel is forthcoming.
