Former Saturday Night Live writer and producer Robert Smigel uses animal puppets to say and do the lewdest things. His most infamous creation is Triumph, The Insult Comic Dog, who made a name for himself "pooping" on guests of Late Night With Conan O'Brian.
Triumph the Comic Insult Dog's bark may be worse than his bite: The canine puppet has been mocking Hollywood celebrities for over a decade now. Robert Smigel, Triumph's creator, talks about the furry late-night fixture and his other comedy projects.
This weekend, Saturday Night Live devote 90 minutes to a collection of Robert Smigel's TV Funhouse shorts. Those satirical cartoons featured gags such as the Ambiguously Gay Duo and X-Presidents. Smigel wrote for SNL from 1985-1993, and he was the original head writer/producer for Late Night With Conan O'Brien.
