The novelist has a new novel set in Alabama which features, among other characters, two memorable prostitutes. Brown has also started writing for television. She talks about the increasing presence of gay people in mass media, and her own experiences as an out lesbian.
Journalist Leroy Aarons and President of the newly formed National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association. Aarons is founder of the group which was organized to deal with issues in the media involving gays and lesbians, to counter the homophobia often found in the mass media, and to promote fair and ethical treatment of gay and lesbian journalists who often fear exposure. The group is holding its first conference this week in San Francisco. Aarons is former editor, national correspondent, and bureau chief for The Washington Post and former executive editor for The Oakland Tribune.
Chaz Bono is the child of Sonny Bono and Cher. In 1990 Star Magazine "outed" Bono as a lesbian. Since then Bono has become an outspoken advocate for lesbian and gay rights. Bono was the former spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign, a national lesbian and gay political organization. Bono is now Entertainment Media Director for the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.
